Donilo was born in Robsart, Saskatchewan on November 18, 1944 to his parents Mr and Mrs Wasyl Hirny.
In October 1949 he moved with his parents to Rocanville, Saskatchewan. He went to Oak Knoll School in the fall of 1949 until 1956.
He started his work career with several farmers around Rocanville Saskatchewan. He worked for Denzil Sutton of Rocanville. Later he worked in a bush camp with his brother Roman Hirny. That was followed by a number of other jobs; Maple Leaf Mills, Brent Construction, R. J. Robinson Pumps and caretaker of 4th Line Pub and Grill.
